Campaign Auto-Paused: What to Do
Key Takeaway
Campaigns auto-pause on a 2% bounce rate or 0.1% spam complaint rate, but only once there's real volume behind it (at least 10 sends on Trial, 50 on Pro and Ultra). The bounce check also needs at least 3 actual bounces, while a single spam complaint can pause sending. Clean the list, then resume from the goal.
Why campaigns auto-pause
Your campaign paused automatically to protect your sender reputation. This can happen when:
| Threshold | Limit | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Bounce rate | above 2% | Too many invalid addresses |
| Spam complaint rate | above 0.1% | Recipients marking your email as spam |
Both thresholds only apply once a campaign has meaningful volume: at least 10 sends on Trial, or 50 on Pro and Ultra. The bounce check also needs at least 3 actual bounces, so a single bounce out of your first 15 or 20 emails won't pause anything. A spam complaint is treated more strictly: one is enough to pause once past that volume floor.
Recovery steps
For a high bounce rate (over 2%)
- Go to your Leads page and filter by status "Bounced"
- Look for a pattern, old domains, typos, defunct companies
- Check whether these leads came from a specific source or time period
- No action needed on the bounced leads themselves, they're already removed from the campaign
- Open the campaign from its goal on the Goals page and click Resume
To prevent it next time:
- Emails are verified before sending, but an address can still go bad after verification
- Consider narrowing your target audience toward more established businesses
- If bounces keep recurring, verification data may be stale, your agent re-verifies on resume
For high spam complaints (over 0.1%)
This one's more serious. Spam complaints directly damage your sender reputation.
- Review your recent outreach content in your weekly report
- Ask whether the outreach is actually relevant to these recipients
- Double check the audience you're reaching
- Walk through:
- Is the value proposition clear in the first sentence?
- Is the email too long or too sales-heavy?
- Is the unsubscribe link clearly visible?
- Could the subject line read as misleading?
- Before resuming: narrow the audience, tighten the goal, or chat with your agent about adjusting tone
After resuming
Your agent watches rates closely after a resume. If a threshold gets crossed again, the campaign pauses again. Rather than resuming the same campaign repeatedly, consider having your agent draft a new one with tighter targeting, use the Draft outreach campaign quick action on the goal.
